How many of us down thru the years have heard those words and simply walked past refusing to even look at the person who spoke them? The person that was saying them was a part of our society that we all, even if only unknowingly, felt was not worth our attention. This person was not one of us, he was not our brother, sister, or child, he/she was just some non person who, to those of us who had important things to do and places to go, simply did not fit in our version of society! Fast forward a few years, and now a recession (depression?) has hit this great nation like a fast moving hurricane and people are losing their jobs, their homes and in some cases even their dignity. Suddenly we have started to see our friends, our neighbors and in some cases even our relatives, fall upon hard times that forces many of them to become the home less person you are now seeing on the street asking “Hey Buddy Can You Spare A Dollar”! Suddenly now that this is happening, many people are now realizing that but for a little luck and the grace of God, it could be them that is standing there! What do we do now? Do we continue to walk past and pretend these people are simply standing there wanting to take our hard earned money from us? Do we open our hearts and our wallets to offer them some temporary relief? Do we open our homes and give them a warm place of shelter from the cold of winter? Or do we simply continue to ignore our fellow human and go about our lives as if they don’t exist?
I won’t pretend to know the right answer for you, only you after searching your heart will know the answer to these question! I will simply ask that you, on this day as you give thanks to remember that many people in this county today do not have much to be thankful for this year! Perhaps you could do something special for one of these people today to give them a little something to be thankful for and a hope for a better future?
I wish each and everyone of you here on NV a Happy Holliday!!
